Trinity St. James’s Cancer Institute
The Trinity St James’s Cancer Institute (TSJCI) is transforming cancer care in Ireland by combining world-class science with excellent patient care to pioneer new ways to prevent, detect and treat cancer. This is essential: Ireland has the third highest cancer rate in the world, and cancer is the cause of one in four deaths nationally.
The first cancer centre in Ireland to be accredited by the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI), TSJCI is now working towards becoming Ireland's first Comprehensive Cancer Centre (CCC). Globally, cancer centres that integrate research, clinical trials, patient care and education are proven to deliver the best care for patients. A CCC is a national priority for Ireland, and TSJCI is leading the way.
Trinity College Dublin is ranked in the top 1% of research institutions globally in medicine and biological sciences, with particular expertise in the areas of genetics and immunology which are revolutionising cancer care. Trinity’s Smurfit Institute of Genetics is internationally recognised while the Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute (TBSI) has helped to position Ireland as first in the world for quality of science in immunology (measured by citations per paper).
St. James’s Hospital is a centre of excellence for the delivery of cancer care in Ireland and has long-established teaching and research links with Trinity. TSJCI is co-located with St James’s Hospital, Trinity Translational Medicine Institute, HRB-Wellcome Trust Clinical Trials Facility, Mercer’s Institute for Successful Ageing, St. Luke’s Radiation Centre, and the new National Children’s Hospital (currently under construction).
At the signing of the official Memorandum of Understanding for TSJCI in June 2021, two world-class oncologists were announced as Directors: Professor Maeve Lowery and Professor John Kennedy.
TSJCI is being developed in two stages: we are currently in Phase 1, scaling activity across four integrated and patient-centred pillars:
- Patient Care: accelerate translation of scientific discovery to patient treatments.
- Cancer Clinical Trials: increase the participation of eligible cancer patients enrolled in cancer clinical trials in TSJCI and Ireland.
- Research: pioneering research to deliver improved treatments and patient outcomes.
- Education: provide world-class education and training to the next generation of cancer leaders in Ireland.
Phase 2 will see a new Cancer Institute built on St James’s Hospital campus.
Philanthropic support is playing a crucial role in accelerating the development of TSJC, supporting the resources and capital infrastructure required to translate scientific discovery to patient treatments and train the next generation of clinical and scientific leaders.
