Obituary
Dr Tom O'Shea was a graduate of legal science at the Trinity Law School in 1980. Tom was a much loved, respected and inspirational teacher of students across the globe and an author of several highly-regarded publications on tax.

Dr Tom O'Shea was the Director of the Academy of European and International Taxation, London and a Chartered Tax Adviser (Fellow). He was the Editor of EC Tax Journal and contributed articles to Tax Notes International and other international tax journals. He was a former Editor of Informa's International Tax Report and a former Senior Lecturer in Tax Law at Queen Mary, the University of London (until August 2016) and former co-director of the MA in Tax Programme at the University of London.
Tom was an Examiner for the Chartered Institute of Taxation and had helped design and implement their Advanced Diploma in International Taxation (ADIT) since its initial stages. He had also been an Examiner for the Securities and Investment Institute. In addition, he had acted as an independent consultant for the Lexis-Nexis EU Tracker Project.
Tom had been a visiting professor at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, since 2005, the University of Vilnius, since 2011 and the University of Valencia, since 2012. He was also the Visiting Professor in Transnational Law at Northwestern University, Chicago, USA (2013). Tom regularly spoke on EU and International tax matters and spoke at conferences and universities in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Lithuania, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Slovakia, Denmark, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Malta, Greece, Sweden, Austria, Belgium, United States, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Singapore, Australia and Thailand.
Tom organised customised EU and International Tax training courses, conferences and events. Tom also organised the annual Avoir Fiscal EU Tax Conference in London.
Tom was the author of Understanding EU Tax 2020 and EU Tax Law and Double Tax Conventions (2008). The latter is still a leading textbook on the direct tax jurisprudence of the Court of Justice of the EU. He also authored "Triangle Model," which explains how national tax rules and double tax convention rules interact with EU law.
Tom was also a talented basketball coach with the Irish team Delta Notre Dame.
