Living Latin
An Initiative of the Department of Classics at Trinity College, Dublin
The project seeks to research, articulate, and share the value of Latin as an academic subject at both second- and third-level in the Republic of Ireland.
If you are TCD student you may be eligible to take the elective module TEU00392 Latin: One Language, Many Cultures at a certain point in your degree; the extramural (evening) course SC05/6 Latin Language and Culture runs during term time in hybrid (in person/online) format, and is open to TCD students, staff, as well as members of the general public.
The Living Latin project was begun in 2019 by Professor Anna Chahoud, and its first phase was completed in 2022. Read more here.
Line of Enquiry, a compendium of classical essays from the community of Trinity College, Dublin, was published in paperback in 2018, edited by Dr. Paul Corcoran.
The blog Confabulations (2019–2022) has now been revised and published as Living Latin: Everyday Language and Popular Culture (Bloomsbury Academic, 2024).
The Latin-learning app tabella, designed by Dr Kevin McGee in association with Professor Anna Chahoud, Dr Frank Lynam, and Dr Charlie Kerrigan, remains freely available to users at tabella.ie.
The Latin Inscriptions of Ireland project is ongoing, and seeks to crowd-source Latin inscriptions on the island of Ireland. You can visit the website here. I spoke about the project at the Classical Association of Ireland Summer School in August 2025; you can download the presentation slides here.
Details of the next Schools Speech Competition, to take place in Spring 2026, will be posted here in the coming months.
If you are a second-level school teacher, or a member of a community group, and would like to discuss the possibility of a talk or a workshop for your students or group, please don’t hestiate to get in touch.
