Funders’ Requirements for Open Access
A number of research funders have rules in place which make deposit in an Open Access repository a requirement of any grant. All British-based research funding councils and most Irish funding councils have Open Access mandates in place. These include:
- Higher Education Authority (PDF)
- Science Foundation Ireland (PDF)
- Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology
- Wellcome Trust
- National Institutes of Health (NIH)
- European Commission
- European Research Council (PDF)
Other funders (for example the Health Research Board) make strong recommendations for Open Access deposit, or may make additional funds available for publication in an Open Access journal, or in one of the hybrid journals set up by some publishers.
A British-based service called JULIET, provides a checklist of funding agencies and their Open Access requirements for research outputs.
The Library provides assistance in ensuring compliance with funders’ Open Access mandates. Making publications Open Access via deposit in TARA ensures compliance with the majority of funders’ mandates. Where additional deposit in an external repository (eg PubMed Central) is specified, the Library can assist with this also.
